31 Days of Boston — Day 23

Boston’s merchants and sailors connected New England to an Atlantic economy that brought wealth, risk, exploitation, and global influence.

For generations, Boston’s harbor was its highway to the world.

Ships carried fish, timber, manufactured goods, and other cargoes outward and returned with products, news, people, and capital. Merchants built fortunes by understanding distant markets and accepting enormous risk.

The Atlantic economy was also morally complicated. New England commerce intersected with systems of slavery and exploitation throughout the Atlantic world. Rum, sugar, shipping, insurance, finance, and trade could connect Boston businesses to economies dependent on enslaved labor even when the transactions occurred far from Massachusetts.

Maritime wealth helped finance institutions and shape neighborhoods. Sailors brought cosmopolitan experience into a town often remembered only for Puritanism or revolution.

Boston’s later development as a center of finance, education, and industry cannot be separated from the harbor. Before railroads and highways, the sea made Boston global.
