Biography

Robert Edward “Ted” Turner III (November 19, 1938 – May 6, 2026) built a single Atlanta UHF station into Turner Broadcasting System, launching the superstation concept with WTBS and, in 1980, founding CNN as the world’s first 24-hour cable news channel. He went on to launch TNT, Cartoon Network and Turner Classic Movies, and owned the Atlanta Braves, who won the 1995 World Series under his ownership.

Accomplishments

Pledged $1 billion to establish the United Nations Foundation, co-founded the Nuclear Threat Initiative in 2001, and joined the Giving Pledge in 2010, committing the majority of his fortune to philanthropy. Forbes gave him a perfect philanthropy score in 2020.
