31 Days of Boston — Day 16

On December 16, 1773, protesters destroyed East India Company tea in Boston Harbor and transformed a tax dispute into an imperial showdown.

On the night of December 16, 1773, men moved from a mass meeting toward Boston’s waterfront. Their target was tea aboard ships connected to the East India Company.

The Tea Act did not simply make tea expensive; in some respects it could make legal tea cheaper. The deeper issue was political. Accepting the tea and its duty risked conceding Parliament’s claimed authority to tax the colonies.

The protesters boarded the vessels and dumped hundreds of chests of tea into Boston Harbor. The destruction was disciplined enough to send a message but dramatic enough to be impossible to ignore.

London’s response was severe. Parliament passed measures colonists called the Intolerable Acts, including restrictions aimed directly at Massachusetts and Boston.

The Tea Party therefore succeeded and failed at the same time. It prevented the tea from being quietly landed and taxed, but it provoked punishment. That punishment, however, encouraged other colonies to see Boston’s cause as their own. A harbor protest helped turn a local crisis into a continental one.
