The Battle of Bunker Hill proved that colonial forces could stand against British regulars, even in defeat.

31 Days of Boston — Day 20

The Battle of Bunker Hill proved that colonial forces could stand against British regulars, even in defeat.

On June 17, 1775, smoke rose over Charlestown as British troops advanced toward hastily built colonial fortifications.

Most of the fighting associated with the Battle of Bunker Hill actually took place on Breed’s Hill. The British eventually captured the position, making the battle a tactical British victory.

But the price was severe. Repeated frontal attacks produced heavy British casualties. Colonial forces withdrew, yet they had demonstrated that inexperienced provincial troops could inflict enormous damage on one of the world’s most respected armies.

For Boston, the battle was terrifyingly close. Charlestown burned. Residents could see and hear the violence surrounding the besieged town.

Bunker Hill became a lesson in the difference between taking ground and achieving strategic success. Britain held the field, but the battle hardened resistance and demonstrated that suppressing the rebellion would be costly.
