Two Launches, One Coast: How Grand Strand App and Spot Check App Came Together

Boston Made’s two newest brands were built side by side: a live guide to the Grand Strand and a community parking marketplace. Here is how they came together.

Dear Sir or Madam,

Every company in the Boston Made family starts the same way: with a problem I can see from where I am standing. This fall, two of them went live at once. Grand Strand App and Spot Check App are the newest brands in our portfolio, and I want to tell you how they came together, because they were built side by side and they make the most sense when you see them that way.

It started with a rental, not an app

The first idea for Grand Strand App was narrow. I wanted something like a social network for properties: a place where vacation rentals along the Grand Strand, and the people who own them, could have a real presence instead of a listing buried on a booking site. That idea did not go away. It got bigger.

The more we built, the clearer it became that a guest does not wake up asking which rental platform to open. They wake up asking what the water looks like, when the tide turns, whether it is going to rain, and where to eat tonight. So we rebuilt the front door around those questions.

What Grand Strand App does today

Open grandstrand.app and the first thing you see is the coast right now: surf conditions, the next tide (read from the NOAA gauge at Springmaid Pier), beach-safety notes, and current weather. Under that is a short list of places worth your time, from the Murrells Inlet MarshWalk to downtown Conway to the Pee Dee State Farmers Market in Florence.

The piece I am proudest of is the concierge. You tell it what you are in the mood for and it gives you three stops with drive times, tuned to the weather, the tide, and the time of day. Plans save to your device so you can pull them up later.

Around that sits a daily local news desk, the ongoing Grand Strand Season series, visitor guides like beach rules by season and a hurricane-season plan for renters, and a section for owners and hosts covering rental compliance, storm prep, and guest parking. The original rental-owner idea lives there now, as part of something people will actually open every morning.

Then we kept running into parking

You cannot write a useful guide to a beach town without writing about parking. Our own Grand Strand Season series kept circling back to it: where the free downtown parking is, how North Myrtle Beach handles it, whether guests should valet. Every one of those stories ended in the same place. There are empty driveways and garages a few blocks from the sand, and no simple way for a driver to find them.

That is where Spot Check App came from. It is a community parking marketplace. Drivers search a live map of driveway, garage, lot, street, covered, and EV-charging spaces, each with a status and an hourly price. They message the host with a question or send a booking request for the time they need, then park and leave a review so the next driver knows what to expect.

For hosts, listing a space takes about two minutes: drop a pin, choose the type, set a price per hour, note the size or clearance, add a photo, and publish. Our tagline says it simply: every spot has a story.

Two brands, one connection

We built these two to lean on each other. Grand Strand App has a “reserve a driveway” option that sends people straight to Spot Check, and a “list a parking space” option for owners who want to earn from theirs. Spot Check publishes a daily Parking Briefing that flows into Boston Made Reader, the same way Grand Strand App’s local coverage reaches the rest of our network.

Both run on the same Boston Made foundation as our other properties, which means the shared header, the network links at the bottom of every page, and the music player that follows you from site to site. When you move from planning a day on the coast to finding a place to park for it, it should feel like one experience, because it is.

What comes next

Both brands now have full profiles on our Brands page. Over the coming months we are focused on getting more hosts onto Spot Check across the Grand Strand, inviting local businesses to claim verified listings on Grand Strand App, and making the concierge smarter about events and seasonal changes. A native app experience is on the roadmap.

If you own a driveway near the beach, list it. If you are heading to the coast, plan your next three stops. And if you have an idea for what either one should do next, I want to hear it.
