Boston has been a proving ground for world-changing ideas since the 1600s — home to the nation’s first public school, the first state to abolish slavery, the invention of the telephone, the first successful organ transplant, and generation after generation of biotech and robotics breakthroughs. Boston Made: From Revolution to Robotics tells the story of fifty of the region’s standout innovations, tracing the entrepreneurial culture that produced them through four major cycles of economic bust and reinvention.

Inside the book

The nation’s first public school, and the culture of education that took root in colonial Boston
Massachusetts’s early move to abolish slavery, and its lasting influence on the region’s civic identity
The invention of the telephone, and the communications breakthroughs that followed it
The first successful human organ transplant, performed at a Boston hospital
Generations of biotech, medical-device, and robotics breakthroughs that carried the city’s inventive streak into the 21st century
The four boom-and-bust economic cycles that repeatedly forced the region to reinvent itself — and kept it inventing
